Some properties of a room temperature THz detection array

چکیده
Detection peculiarities of an un-cooled (room temperature) 8×8 pixel array designed to image broadband THz radiation were investigated. Each pixel consists of a thin conductive film absorber on a dielectric membrane with thermopile temperature readout. It was designed and tested for four combinations of two different types of absorber and thermopile materials. The photo-response profile, determined by scanning the pixels through the focus of a THz laser beam, was wider than expected from a 2-D convolution of the Gaussian beam and the absorber surface. Also the time response did depend on the position of the beam relative to the pixel. Simulations show that those properties are due to the fact that also the thermopiles absorb THz radiation. For the best composition of absorber and thermopile, the responsivity, the noise equivalent power, and the bandwidth were estimated to be of 28 V/W, 5×10 W/Hz and 50 Hz, respectively.

By developing the terahertz (THz) technology, in addition to generators and detectors of THz waves, the existence of some tools such as modulators and filters are needed. THz filters are important tools for various applications in the field of chemical and biological sensors. Linear and nonlinear optical properties of the graphene have attracted lots of attention. In fact graphene exhibits vari...
متن کاملSuppressed absolute negative conductance and generation of high-frequency radiation in semiconductor superlattices
– We show that space-charge instabilities (electric field domains) in semiconductor superlattices are the attribute of absolute negative conductance induced by small constant and large alternating electric fields. We propose the efficient method for suppression of this destructive phenomenon in order to obtain a generation at microwave and THz frequencies in devices operating at room temperatur...

We report the use of a 50-mW peak power 4.3-THz quantum cascade laser (QCL) as an illumination source for realtime imaging with a 320 240 element room-temperature microbolometer focal-plane array detector. The QCL is modulated synchronously with the focal-plane array for differential imaging. Signal-to-noise ratios of 340 are achieved at a 20-frame/s acquisition rate, and the optical noise equi...
